The government will make the power plant as a model for other power plant projects as the development of the plant could run smoothly despite government?s financial constraints.
Cilacap power plant, which has 2x300 megawatts capacity, was built with the help of foreign loans and the government didn?t give any guarantee for those loans.
?This power plant was built in record time. It was completed only in 24 months,? Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said.
Meanwhile, The Jakarta Post reported on Wednesday that Yudhoyono and his entourage were greeted by hundreds of protesting residents in Cilacap.
The plant?s operation is expected to save around 1.1 billion liters of fuel every year, equal to Rp 5.1 trillion (US$554.3 million) from the state?s coffers.
The total cost of the project was around Rp 4 trillion.
The Cilacap coal-fired power plant, built by Chengda Engineering Corporation of China (CECC) in cooperation with local investor, PT Sumber Segara Primadaya.
The construction of the Cilacap coal-fired power plant commenced on December 29, 2003. (godang)
