Press Release: Antam's gold unit resolves community protest
SBU gold to improve community programs by incorporating more local residents

Jakarta, March 12, 2003 - PT Antam Tbk announces Wednesday that on March 10, 2003 management resolved a misunderstanding that led to a peaceful rally earlier that same day at Kampung Pasir Gintung, Bogor Regency, which is located approximately 16 kilometers from Antam's Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Gold, at Pongkor.
Tens of community members staged the peaceful rally to air grievances over the alleged unfairness of Antam's community development programs, requesting more attention to community welfare and more job opportunities for local residents.
Antam and the protesting community members reached an agreement where Antam will improve its community development programs by incorporating more local residents. Neither production activity nor facilities were affected by the rally. SBU Gold has a production capacity of 3,800 ? 4,l00 kg of gold per year.
Antam's approach to community development is to collaborate with local citizens to create proactive programs to better serve the local community.
SBU Gold contributes in many ways, including he construction and development of infrastructure, assisting local organization and creating job opportunities for local residents. Antam also helped create a community forum called FKMNA to represent local residents.
In 2002, 48 percent of SBU Gold employees came from nearby Nanggung, Leuwiliang and the area surrounding Pongkor; 22 percent of employees came from other areas in the Bogor Regency.
An aspect of Antam's mission is to participate in improving he welfare of the people living near the mine area.
