PRESS RELEASE: KEM and SP-KEP Union signed a new CLA
Includes a competitive redundancy package due to mine closure

Attending the signing ceremony were Charlie Lenegan, KEM?s President Director, Decky Bedowo, SP-KEP?s Chairman and officials from East Kalimantan and Kutai Manpower Offices.
Charlie Lenegan, President Director said, ?The negotiation was very constructive and we are pleased that we have established a sound basis for employee relationships for the next 2 years. We have also agreed on redundancy arrangements which will apply through to mine closure in 2004.?
Chairman of SP-KEP, Decky Bedowo said, ?The agreements in the new CLA are good. The management was cooperative during the negotiation process. We are happy that we could finalise the new CLA before the 30 June expiry date of the previous CLA.?
?The negotiation of Article 60 regarding mine closure redundancy package was the most difficult. But we finally agreed on this article and we appreciate that the management could accommodate our aspirations,? he added.
Redundancy benefits
Under the new CLA, KEM will provide competitive redundancy benefits. In addition, KEM also provide various training programmes for employees to prepare themselves for lives after Kelian.
?This is part of our commitment for a responsible closure and to working together for sustainable solutions for employees and community,? said Charlie Lenegan.
KEM operates a gold mine in Kelian, West Kutai, East Kalimantan since 1992. KEM will be winding down its mining activities over the period 2001-2003 and will close its operations in 2004. Some environmental management and monitoring activities will continue beyond this date.
