Monday, March 24 2003 - 08:50 AM WIB
?These programs aim to improve the understanding of Kutai Barat community in environmental protection and in properly managing solid waste problems in the growing Kutai Barat district,? said Charlie Lenegan, President Director KEM.
The awareness programs will mainly target school children, teachers, government personnel and village leaders. ?After participating in the program, we hope the participants will be able to become environmental champions in their respected areas and to promote better environmental awareness in the community. This is in line with KEM?s sustainable solutions principles,? he added.
The Programs
There are five environment educational programs to be conducted. The first program is Environmental Awards for elementary and high schools. The one-year program will encourage students in 50 schools to maintain a healthy environment in their schools. The best performers will be given awards and trophies.
The second program is story-telling workshop for teachers, scout instructors, women groups and university students. This program will provide participants with skills to present story-telling to promote environmental awareness among the community. KEM will also provide story books and story audiotapes for the participants.
Story telling will also be presented to students at elementary schools in Tutung and Linggang Melapeh. Environmental discussions will be held for junior high schools in Linggang Bigung, Barong Tongkok and Melak.
?The other important program is the solid waste management workshop. The one-day program will be attended by about 50 participants from government, community, local NGO?s and women groups. They will discuss the principles of community-based solid waste management,? said Charlie Lenegan.
