Press Release:KEM to pay 5000 new compensation claims

PT Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM) started to pay 5026 new compensation claims Friday in Linggang Bigung, West Kutai.

The payments relate to new claims for houses and land and are being paid in accordance with an agreement signed with community members at Long Iram in July. Each claimant will receive Rp2,285,350 making a total payment of Rp11.486 billion.

KEM has made several compensation payments, starting from when it commenced operation, but large numbers of additional claims were received in recent years as new claimants emerged and as old claimants sought additional compensation.

?KEM is committed to ensuring that people who have genuinely suffered loss as a result of the development and operation of the mine, should receive fair compensation,? said Charlie Lenegan, President Director PT KEM.

?KEM has committed to working with all relevant parties to resolve outstanding issues as soon as possible,? said Charlie Lenegan.

KEM operates a gold mine in Kelian, West Kutai, East Kalimantan. KEM will be winding down its mining activities over the period 2001-2003 and will close its operations in 2004.
