PROFILE: Rudi Rubiandini, former best student becomes vice minister

People who well know Rudi Rubiandini understand that the man has talents, skills and capabilities needed for important job.
Indeed, less than one year after being appointed to be Operation Control Deputy at upstream authority BPMIGAS ? an important position at the agency - he has been promoted to be Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. The appointment of Rudi was announced by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Bogor State Palace, broadcast live by national television stations.
Rudi replaced Widjajono Partowidagdo, who died while climbing Mount Tambora in West Nusa Tenggara in April this year.
Like Widjajono, Rudi graduated from the School of Petroleum Engineering at the prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). He got his doctoral degree from Technische Universitaet Clausthal (Clusthal University of Technology) of Germany. The educational background will surely help him very much in doing his job as the second man in the ministry to support Minister Jero Wacik, who does not have educational background in oil and mining. Jero is a Mechanical Engineering graduate.
Rudi, now 50, was graduated from ITB in 1985 and from Clausthal in 1991.
Rudi was known as a bright student at ITB. He received ?The Best Student? award in 1984. The university?s board of management was also very impressed at his lecturing performance that he was named ?The Best Lecture? twice in 1994 and 1998.
Rudi is also known as a man with high communication skills. His fellow engineers at the Indonesian Petroleum Engineers Society (IATMI) were impressed at his skills that they awarded him ?The Best Presenter Award? in the association?s congresses in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004.
Rudi is also known as a man with innovative thinking. He has invented seven technical tools for oil and gas research, created more than 30 computer software applications for oil and gas engineering and invented the so-called ?expanding cement?. In view of these achievements, he was awarded ?The National Innovator Award? by IATMI in 2002.
Mitigating mudflow is one of Rudi?s skills. He led the team to stop mudflow at Lengowangi well in Gresik, East Java, owned by PetroChina and Pertamina in December 2008. The team managed to stop the mudflow within four days. He was also asked to design the methods of stopping the Lapindo mudflow in Sidoarjo, East Java. From April through October 2009, he served as advisor to Pertamina in the efforts to end the gas and mudflow at Merbau well in southern Sumatra.
Rudi is also known as an effective problem solver. Some problems in the industry that remained unsolved for many years have finally found solutions thanks to Rudi?s involvement in the negotiations. The problems concerned among others were the development of Kepodang field in Central Java, the delivery of gas from Gajah Baru field in West Natuna, the price of LNG exports to South Korean company Kogas, the settlement of debt owed by petrochemical firm TPPI.
