Around 300 demonstrators Monday held a peaceful rally at the project compound of oil producer Unocal Indonesia Company in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, to protest U.S.-led military attack on Iraq.

?It was a peaceful demonstration. Security was under control,? Unocal?s community relations manager Suta Vijaya told Petromindo.Com.

The protest rally did not disrupt Unocal?s normal activities, Suta said.

Some of the protesters were allowed into Unocal?s compound to meet with its officials including David Stangor, senior vice president and general manager of Unocal Balikpapan.

Stangor told the demonstrators, who claimed to be supporters of Justice Party, that his company was determined to maintain close cooperation with the Indonesian government and the local community.

Meanwhile, Suta told Petromindo.Com no expatriate worker of Unocal had been evacuated.

Unocal Indonesia Company is a unit of US oil company Unocal Corporation. (godang)
