The protesting employees of PT Hanamas, the contractor of East Kalimantan coal mining giant PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), failed again to reach agreement with the company's management team over demand for a salary hike, the local Kaltim Post daily reported.

The paper said that the two sides, via the mediation of the local East Kutai administration, had met six times to seek solution to end the 20-day employee strike.

The management had agreed to raise the salary of employees whose monthly take home pay was less than Rp 400,000 (US$1=Rp 9,600) to around Rp 435,000 per month. The company also agreed to raise the salary of employees whose monthly pay was more than Rp 450,000 by Rp 50,000.

But some employees said that this was unfair because employees who currently receives Rp 300,000 per month would get an increase of Rp 135,000 per month under the management proposal.(*)
