Gold miner PT J Resources Asia Pasifik Tbk (IDX: PSAB) is assessing the underground mining potential at its Penjom gold mine in Pahang, Malaysia, following the completion of a high-level underground study.

In a presentation filed with the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), the company said it has completed the Penjom underground “High Level” study after reassessing remaining gold resources beneath the Kelampong open pit. The Kelampong pit began operations in 1996 and was closed in 2019.

PSAB reported that in-pit gold reserves currently stand at 171,000 ounces. Most of the remaining in-situ resources, totaling 1.17 million ounces, are located below the Kelampong open pit, mainly within the H-4, H-5 and H-6 zones.

The study indicates that improved understanding of the geological controls on Penjom’s mineralization has revealed potential repeated mineralized sequences below the former open pit, supporting the case for underground development.

Based on the assessment, underground resources are estimated at 9.7 million tonnes grading 3.21 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold, equivalent to 1.00 million ounces. Underground reserves are estimated at 3.18 million tonnes at an average grade of 3.52 g/t gold, containing around 332,000 ounces.

The high-level study provides an initial technical basis for further evaluation of potential underground mining at the Penjom operation.
