PT Adaro, one of major coal mining companies in South Kalimantan, has finally agreed to compensate villagers for some part of their 96-hectare lands located in the company's mine concession, Banjarmasin Pos reported on Wednesday.

"For the first stage, we will pay compensation for 23 hectares, with a price of Rp 35 million a hectare," said Andriansyah, the spokesman of the company during a meeting with the head of the local legislative council.

Residents living in the Buntu Karau village in Juai district in the Paringin regency demanded PT Adaro to pay compensation for about 96 hectares of land located in the company's concession.

The company previously refused to pay the compensation for the areas which were formerly used by PT Gunung Meranti as its industrial forest. (*)
