The South Kalimantan-based coal mining company PT Adaro Indonesia and its mining contractor PT Pama Persada Nusantara have backed out of a plan to provide financial assistance to local villagers as part of their community development programs.
The villagers in Amuntai accused the two companies of breaking their own promise to help provide financial aid to 117 small-scale companies in the community.
In September, 2001, the two companies agreed to provide financial aid to the 117 small-scale companies as part of their community development programs. The aid is disbursed in two phases, but the villagers said that the second aid disbursement has not been made.
When confirmed, the companies acknowledged that two second part of the financial aid had not been fulfilled due to technical reason. Thee companies said that the remaining aid will be disbursed after the review on the first aid is competed. (*)
