South Sumatra-based state owned coal mining company PT Batubara Bukit Asam (PT BA) will temporarily stop exploration activities within the next six months to ensure that the existing coal reserves could last for longer time, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Wednesday.

PT BA's spokesman Milawarma said that the company would continue to produce coal from the existing mining sites such as those located in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, Ombilin, West Sumatra and Cerenti, Riau.

He said that with the production level of between nine million tons and 10 million tons a year, PT BA's existing coal reserves estimated to reach about 7.3 billion tons would be mineable for long time.

"The halt of the exploration activities would not affect the company's production target," he said. (*)
