State coal mining company PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PT BA) and Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL) on Wednesday signed a basic cooperation agreement to prevent spontaneous combustion at PT BA?s mines.
Spontaneous combustion prevention technology developed by JCOAL is meant to minimize fire at underground mines.
China has used the technology successfully, said JCOAL president Katsuyoshi Ando who signed the accord with PT BA president director Ismet Harmaini.
PT BA operates coalmines in South Sumatra, annually producing around 10 million tons of coal.
Indonesia is Japan?s major coal supplier. (godang)
