PT BA plans to build two more power plants

State owned coal mining company PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PT BA) plans to build two more coal-fired power plants in South Sumatra province, with a capacity of 2 x 600 megawatt and 4 x 600 MW.

PT BA which operates a massive coal mine in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra would cooperate with Chinese companies in the construction of the two power plants, which were expected to cost between US$800 million and $1 billion.

The company?s corporate secretary Milawarma said that PT BA would also cooperate with other investors in addition to the Chinese companies. ?The negotiations are underway,? he was quoted as saying.

PT BA is currently conducting a feasibility study on the construction of two coal-fired power plants in Banko Tengah and in Peranap near the company?s coal mine site in Tanjung Enim.

The power to be produced from the Banko Tengah and Peranap power plants will be supplied to the Java ? Sumatra power transmission grid which will be built by state owned electricity company.

?A feasibility on the construction of the Banko Tengah power plant which will have a capacity of 4 x 600 MW is now under way. The power plant will be built in cooperation with China Huadian, ? he added.

He said that PT BA was also conducting a feasibility study on the construction of a double railway track linking the company?s mining site to Muntok port near the Bangka Strait and to the company?s coal terminal in Tarahan, Lampung.

The company would cooperate with CITIC China in the construction of the double railway track to Muntok port and with another Chinese company China Rail in the construction of the double railway track to Lampung. The Muntok railway project will cost about $490 million while the Lampung railway project will cost about $650 million. (godang)
