State owned coal-mining company PT Tambang Batu Bara Bukit Asam (PT BA) plans to sell electricity to neighboring Johor, Malaysia as part of the company's program to become an integrated energy company, Media Indonesia reported on Monday.

President of the coal producer R. Sunardi said on Saturday that the power supply that would be sold to the neighboring country would come from a new plant to be built in Cerenti, Riau. "The construction of the new plant, with a generating capacity of 2X 600 megawatts, will be started in 2006," he added.

He said the feasibility study of the power plant including those for the construction plant site and the transmission facilities for the electricity to Malaysia had been completed but he denied disclosing the total amount of investment needed for the project.

Sunardi said that PT Bukit Asam, which expected to supply at least 6 million tons to the planned power plant, would build a 266.5-kilometer-transmission facility to channel the power supply to the neighboring Malaysia.

The transmission will comprise 204-kilometer on-land transmission facilities and 62.5-kilometer submarine cable across the Malaka Strait, he added.

PT BA operates a mining area in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatera but it ships its coal through Tarakan coal terminal in Lampung, has to pay a numerous tax and fees to the two provincial administrations. (*)
