PT Barisan Sumatera Mining may soon close its gold mine operation in Lubuk Linggau, South Sumatera after most of its Australian staff went home, a senior mine official in the province has said.

Fauzi Zakarim, the head of the provincial mining office, said in Palembang on Saturday that most of the company's senior staff mostly coming from Australia had left the mine area and went home after a number of explorations showed no results at all.

"At least 12 drillings had been made. But none of them indicated that there is gold deposits in the area," he was quoted as saying by the Sriwijaya Pos on Monday.

He said that PT Barisan which took over the gold mine area from PT Barisan Tropical Mining several years, had yet to decide whether it would close down its mining operation.

Fauzi said that PT Barisan Tropical quit the mine operations after conducted 52 drillings in the area. But unfortunately, the company's exploration activities failed to find any significant gold deposits. (*)
