PT Barnas Malkmusr Lestari will build a steam power plant in Singaraja, Bali with total investment of about US$340 million to help cope with the electricity shortage on the resort island, Astaga reported on Thursday.

Speaking at hearing with the local legislative council, Emir Sindoro, the president of the company, said that the construction of the 400-Megawatt power plant that would be soon carried out was expected to be completed sometime in 2004.

He said that the company in fact received the permit to build the power plant in 1996 but delayed the plan due to the economic crisis, which started to hit the country in late 1997.

Emir said that the project would be financed by loans from both foreign and local banks. But he added that the company would also give the opportunity to local businessmen to become investors in the project.

At present Bali still relies on state owned electricity company PLN 's operation in Java to supply the island's power need of about 344 Megawatt. (*)
