PT Bukit Asam (PT BA) has laid off 360 of its workers at its Ombilin production unit, Sawah Lunto, West Sumatra due to a continued depletion in the coal reserves in the area, Republika daily reported on Thursday.

The company?s president director Ismet Harmaini said that the company was forced to lay off the workers because the existing coal reserves were no longer economically viable for further exploitation.

"We laid off the 360 workers because the company had practically no more activities," he was quoted as saying.

According to the layoff would be part of the company?s gradual layoff program for the 1000 workers at the Ombilin unit. He added the company would soon lay off another 400 workers as part of the program.(*)
