PT Freeport warehouse razed by fire

A warehouse facility of gold and copper giant PT Freeport Indonesia at the Portsite Pomako, in Mimika Regency, Papua Province was razed by fire late Thursday, Kompas.com reported.

The warehouse facility was used to store copper concentrates produced by the company, the news portal said. Papua Police Spokesman Ahmad Mustafa Kamal confirmed the incident, but said that the fire team managed to put off the fire in 25 minutes.

He said that the fire incident could have been caused by electrical short circuit, but investigation is still underway.

The fire incident occurred amid heightened security condition in Mimika following shooting incident by armed group on Tuesday which killed one police officer, and a hostage crisis where separatist group has taken 1,300 villagers hostage in Mimika?s Tembapura District, near PT Freeport?s mining operation area.
