Canadian metal miner Inco Limited said on Thursday that its Indonesian subsidiary PT. Inco produced 38 million pounds of nickel-in-matte during the first quarter of 2006, an increase of 6 percent compared to previous year?s same quarter production.

The company attributed production increase to operational improvements at the mine and steady power supply during the quarter.

PT. Inco is aiming to produce 167 million pounds of nickel in 2006, slightly higher than last year?s production of 164 million pounds.

The company said the development of the third hydroelectric facility at the mine will enable PT.Inco to increase production by 33 percent to 200 million pounds of nickel-in-matte annually by 2009.

Major construction of the facility would commence in the middle of this year, said the company.

Inco Limited has 61 percent shares at PT. Inco, the JSX-listed nickel miner that operates a nickel mining complex in Sorowako, South Sulawesi.(alex)
