State-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia has signed a cooperation agreement with Russia's Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation to explore maritime-based energy generation projects, as part of efforts to expand international partnerships and strengthen Indonesia's maritime industry.

The agreement was signed during a visit to Russia by a delegation led by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) from May 30 to June 1, according to a statement from PT PAL.

The cooperation includes a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) covering the exchange of information and documents related to potential collaboration in commercial vessels, special-purpose ships and maritime energy projects.

PT PAL Production Director Diana Rosa said participation in the Indonesia-Russia bilateral forum marked a strategic step for the company to broaden its international network and pursue new opportunities in the maritime sector.

According to Rosa, the cooperation is also intended to help PT PAL keep pace with global technological developments while enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesia's shipbuilding industry.

"Participation in this forum demonstrates the company's readiness to adopt global technological advancements while reinforcing PT PAL's strategic role within the national shipbuilding industry ecosystem," Rosa said.

She added that PT PAL remains open to working with international partners to support the sustainable development of the maritime sector.

AHY said PT PAL's involvement in the visit could help strengthen Indonesia-Russia cooperation in infrastructure development and maritime connectivity.

"This visit highlights the importance of strengthening cooperation in integrated infrastructure development and maritime connectivity, including multimodal transportation integration, to support national economic growth," AHY said.

In addition to attending the bilateral forum, PT PAL and members of the Indonesian delegation visited several Russian shipyards and electric ferry projects to study technological developments, innovation and industry best practices.

The visit forms part of Indonesia's broader effort to expand international cooperation in maritime infrastructure and shipbuilding as the country seeks to modernize its fleet and strengthen domestic industrial capabilities.
