PT Santa-Fe Energy Resources, which operates gas fields in Tanjung Jabu regency, Jambi has been required to asphalt the 11.7 kilometer road linking Simpang Lapan and Muarasabak villages in the province, Sriwijaya Pos reported.

The vice governor of the province Uteng Suriadiatna told a hearing with the local legislative council on Monday that the construction of the road was part of the requirements that should be met before the company continued with the construction of its gas pipelining project.

The vice governor said that Santa-Fe was also required not to damage the protected forest or cut the trees when conducting the project. "Although the company has received a permit from the forestry ministry to open the forest for the construction of the gas pipelines, the company is not allowed to cut the trees," he added.

Santa-Fe has been charged by the local administration of stealing the trees and damaged the protected forests along the road.(*)
