The management of coal contractor PT Thies Contractor Indonesia (PT TCI) decided on Monday to reject some of its employees demand to restructure its current policy in wages that they considered to be discriminatory.

The head of the manpower office in Kotabaru district, M. Hatta, said that PT TCI would only review the wage structure after December. For now, Hatta said, the company would refer to the existing policy.

Hatta said that the level of salaries received by the protesting TCI employees was relatively high. "Currently their take home salary reaches almost Rp 1 million a month, excluding money for overtime and meal."

He also said that PT TCI's working system was also still in line with the prevailing regulation.

Nevertheless, Hatta said that the management of TCI and representatives of the protesting employees were still negotiating over the matter.

Councilor Bahrudin Samad said that both parties used to negotiate with the auspices of the Kotabaru Council. But there was no agreement between them.

"As long as TCI observes all labor rules and pay salaries above the minimum level, we could not intervene," he said.

Hundreds of workers at TCI Mine Project went strike on Friday and Saturday, and possibly they would go on striking, demanding better welfare for them.

According to a workers representative, Hendri Trilaksana, they demanded for better salary, better health allowance, non-discrimination in terms of welfare and better working system. (*)
