IDX-listed coal giant PT Bukit Asam Tbk aims to accelerate its planned coal gasification project in South Sumatra in a bid to generate greater added value from its coal, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Tuesday.

The paper quoted PTBA Director of Development Fuad Iskandar Zulkarnain Fachroeddin as saying the company has completed pre-feasibility study for the planned project, and is currently seeking for a foreign partner which has the required coal gasification technology. ?There are a number of alternatives it may be from China or Europe. We?re open (for partnership),? he said.

He said that the proposed coal gasification project will be located at the company?s Tanjung Enim coal concession in South Sumatra. He explained that the company is preparing two scenarios. One is that the gas output will be used as raw material for petrochemical production facility to be also located in South Sumatra, or the second is that the gas output will be transported to potential customers in the country.

PTBA has previously signed a MoU with South Sumatra-based fertilizer firm PT Pupuk Sriwijaya Palembang to use the gas output for raw material in fertilizer production.

Fuad said that the coal gasification project will require 9 million tons of coal supply per year. PTBA hopes the coal gasification project to be completed in 2022 or 2023, he added. (*)
