State owned coal producer PT Batu Bara Bukit Asam has agreed to cooperate with railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to replace aging railway track to support the coal mining company's coal transportation from its mining site in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra to the Tarahan coal terminal in Lampung, Neraca reported on Thursday.
Sukrisno, a director of production of PT Bukit Asam, said that the replacement would be carried out in several section of the Tanjung Enim-Tarahan railway track. "The total length of the railway which will be replaced is about 26 kilometers," he said.
According to him, the new railway tracks have arrived and ready for installation. "The railway tracks in many parts of the 499 km-railway route have been too old to be operated," he said, adding cargo trains carrying Bukit Asam's coal often slipped, delaying the company's coal shipment to both local and overseas buyers.
