The new jetty was inaugurated on Wednesday by Minister of Transportation Ignatius Jonan in Tarahan, PTBA said in a statement.
Including the new one, the Tarahan port now has three jetties, which all enable the port?s capacity to 25 million tons per year. The other jetties have the capacities of 80,000 DWT (Panamax) and 10,000 DWT respectively.
Aside from the new jetty, PTBA has also added another facility, called ship loader with a capacity of 6,000 tons per hour, to the port, which enables the loading of coal into a Capesize 210,000 DWT vessel to be completed within three years --- a very short loading time for a vessel of such type, the firm said.
Besides, PTBA has also installed two new Rotary Car Dumper (RCD) units, bringing the RCD units at the port to four. Now with four RCD units, the port can unload coal from four carriages simultaneously. The firm carries its coal from its mine in Muara Enim, South Sumatra to Tarahan using a long train with a total of 60 carriages each with the capacity of 50 tons.
The increase in the port?s berthing capacity makes PTBA more efficient in terms of transportation costs and raised its advantages on the domestic market as well as on the international market, particularly in competition with coal producers in Australia.
The port has also been equipped with continued and integrated handling system with the most advanced technology to ensure smooth service and reliable operation. The existence of a coal fired power plant (PLTU) with a capacity of 2x8 MW there also ensures continued power supply of power to the port. Furthermore, the port has obtained the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code certificate.
