PTBA, KAI sign Sumatra coal transportation deal

State coal railway firm PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and IDX-listed coal mining firm PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) on Monday signed deal to transport the latter?s coal from Muara Enim, South Sumatra to Kertapati, South Sumatra and Tarahan, Lampung coal ports.

Under the 20-year deal, KAI will transport gradually increase transportation volume to 22.7 MTPA from 2014 onward, starting from 11.5 MT in 2010. At its peak capacity KAI will transport 20MTPA from Muara Enim to Tarahan and 2.7MTPA from Muara Enim to Kertapati.

Currently, KAI transports 11 MTPA of PTBA?s coal to Tarahan and Kertapati.

Earlier, PTBA and KAI planned to form a JV company to transport the coal but later canceled the plan due to obligation to pay US$65 million tax to the government. (kanti/godang)
