State owned coal producer PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) plans to adopt the Upgraded Brown Coal (UBC) technology to upgrade company?s low calorie coal for commercial purposes, Investor Daily reported on Thursday.
PTBA?s corporate secretary Milawarma said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the South Sumatra-based coal producer was currently developing the technology in cooperation with the government.
?If the pilot project now being developed in Cirebon shows a good result, PTBA will adopt the technology for commercial purposes,? he said, adding that with the new technology, coal with a heating value of 5,000 kcal/kg could be upgraded to have a heating value of 6,000 kcal/kg.
According to him, if the technology is proven a success, it could be used to develop the country?s low calorie coal so that Indonesia no longer needs to import high quality coal from China. (*)
