A giant steam power plant, which will have a capacity of 4 x 600 MW will be built in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, with total investment of about US$1.6 billion, Neraca daily reported on Saturday.

The mine-mouth power plant will be jointly built by state owned coal mining company PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA), and a Chinese electric company.

The giant power plant would be built near the Bangko Tengah coal mine in Tanjung Enim regency.

"PTBA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese company on the development of the power plant," he said, adding that the power supply from the new power plant

will be connected to the Java and Bali power inter-connection.

PLN will build a submarine power grid across the Sunda strait to connect the electricity distribution networks in Java and Sumatra. The new facility will enable PLN to transmit the excess of the power supply in Sumatra to electricity distribution facilities in Java. (*)
