State owned coal mining company PT Tambang Batu Bara Bukit Asam (PTBA) received on Tuesday ISO 9002 certificates for its mining operations from the France-based certifier AFAC International to become the first of the country's 40 coal mining operators to obtain such certification.

The company's president R.A. Sunardi said that the success to obtain the ISO 9002 certificate served as an important milestone for the company's initial public offering, which would be launched in June this year.

"With ISO certificate, we hope our buyers will be more confidence in our coal products," he said in his speech at a reception for the presentation of the certificate.

The achievement to meet the quality management standard as set by the International Standardization Organization was quite important to enable the coal mining to compete in international market in the furure, he said, adding that at present the ISO certificate has become one of precondition imposed by major coal importers.

PTBA, with its headquarter in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatera, operates two major coal concession areas in Tanjung Enim and in Ombilin, West Sumatera. The company produced 11.2 million tons of coal in 1999, about 10,6 million tons of the total output were produced from Tanjung mining operation and the other 1.2 million tons from the Ombilin mining site.

The company expects to produce about 12.8 tons this year. (*)
