State coal mining firm PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) said it had added 84 million tons of coal to its reserves following joint exploration conducted by the company and Japan’s agency NEDO.
PTBA said in a press statement released Tuesday that the new reserves addition, which are located in a 3,000-hectare area in Lahat regency, South Sumatra, had increased the company’s reserves to 7.4 billion tons.
PTBA said that 75 percent of the newly discovered reserves have calorific value of 6,800 Kcal/Kg with low ash (below 8 percent) and sulphur contents (below 1 percent). Seams thickness, said the company, vary from 3-13 meters.
Last year, NEDO together with PTBA had also discovered 230 million tons of coal reserve in Kungkilang in Mura Enim regency, part of South Sumatra province. (alex)
