IDX-listed coal giant PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has set up a new subsidiary called PT Bukit Energi Investama (BEI) as the company diversifies into power generation business.

The company said in a statement Wednesday that BEI will be engaged in power plant development, EPC contractor, power plant operation and maintenance, as well as processing of mining and chemical products.

PTBA currently operates a 3x10 MW mine mouth power plant near its coal concession in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra. It also operates a 2x8 MW power plant at its Tarahan coal port in Bandar Lampung. Electricity from both plants are used internally by the company.

Meanwhile, another 2x110 MW mine mouth power plant in Lahat, South Sumatra, is currently waiting to be connected with the South Sumatra interconnection line of state-owned power firm PT PLN.

In the second half of this year, PTBA plans to start construction of the Banko Tengah 2x620 MW mine mouth power plant (also called Sumsel 8 project) in Tanjung Enim.

The company is currently at the stage of reviewing the results of a feasibility study for a planned 800-1,200 MW coal-fired power plant in Peranap, Indragiri Hulu, Riau.

Meanwhile, the planned 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant in North Sumatra is currently at the feasibility study stage.

Outside coal-fired power plant, PTBA via BEI will also develop other sources of energy such as coal bed methane particularly at its Tanjung Enim concession, where the company is scheduled to start operation of power plant in 2016 with capacity of about 250 MW.
