IDX-listed coal giant PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is scheduled to hold ground-breaking August 17 for two coal-fired power plants including the 2x620 MW Sumsel 8 power plant and 2x100 Banjarsari plant, Kontan reported on Wednesday.

The paper quoted PTBA President Director Joko Pramono as saying that either President Joko Widodo or State Minister of State Owned Enterprises Rini Soemarno was expected to lead the ground-breaking ceremony.

He said that construction of the two power plants is expected to be completed in 2019, the electricity output of which would be distributed in South Sumatra and Java.

Joko said that the two power plants, located in South Sumatra, will get coal supply from PTBA?s own production. The Sumsel 8 plant is estimated to require about 5.4 million tons of coal per year, while Banjarsari 1.4 million tons per year.

PTBA has been diversifying into power plant business as it aims to become an integrated energy company. Joko said that his company plans to develop more power plant projects in the future including mine-mouth.

He said that PTBA has also obtained long-term contracts to supply a combined 570 million tons of coal to power plant projects to be developed by either state-owned electricity firm PT PLN or private companies over the next five years.

Joko said that with the company?s combined coal resources of 7.5 billion tons in Sumatra and Kalimantan, PTBA is ready to support the government?s plant to develop a total of 35,000 MW of power plants over the next five years. (*)
