IDX-listed coal giant PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) said it plans to start construction of a 3x350 coal-fired power plant in North Sumatra next year, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Friday.

The paper quoted PTBA President Director Milawarma as saying that the company is currently in the process of completing the feasibility study for the project. ?Next year, construction will start,? he said.

PTBA is teaming up with state-owned aluminum producer PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) in the Rp 20 trillion (US$1.5 billion) power plant project, which is projected to be completed in 2019.

The North Sumatara coal-fired power plant project forms part of a number of coal-fired power plants being planned or developed by PTBA including the PLTU Banko Tengah, or Sumsel 8 coal fired power plant (2x620 MW), PLTU Tanjung Enim (3x10 MW), PLTU Pelabuhan Tarahan (2x8 MW), and PLTU Banjarsari (2x110 MW), the paper said.
