PTC India Ltd., the country's biggest power trader, is in talks with companies in Australia and Indonesia to import coal on long-term contracts to boost electricity generation in the Asian nation, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
"We are trying our best to see whether we can develop some power projects based on domestic coal as well as imported coal and hydropower," Chairman and Managing Director T.N. Thakur said in a phone interview from New Delhi Tuesday.
The size of the market for imported coal for power generation in India is pegged at around 20 million tons. (*)
