PTNNT receives Upakarti Aditama award for mining safety

PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) on Wednesday received the 2002 National Golden Safety trophy ?Upakarti Aditama Group A? award for its safety performance from the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources.

The award is given to PTNNT for achieving the highest safety performance in regards to incident frequency and incident severity rates; and for achieving a zero fatal accident, the company said in a statement.

?In 2002, PTNNT?s employees achieved a Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate of 0.04 without a fatality. While we are proud of our employee?s achievements, we must continue to try and further improve our safety performance. We appreciate the efforts of DEMR (the ministry) and their inspectors at ensuring compliance with safety regulations and laws,? said Phil Brumit, General Manager Operations at PTNNT?s Batu Hijau Mine.

According to the statement, 33 companies were evaluated and 23 were selected. The winners are grouped into three categories: gold, silver and bronze respectively. PTNNT is the only company to receive golden trophy award this year.

PTNNT, which is 56.25 percent-owned by U.S. mining giant Newmont Mining Corp, operates a large copper-gold mine in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara province with a total workforce of 4300 permanent employees of which 60 percent are from the province. (robert)
