Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro on Wednesday left for China to probe the possibility of selling more natural gas to that country.

Purnomo told Petromindo.com he would deliver a letter from President Megawati Sukarnoputri to Zeng Peiyan, chairman of China?s State Development Planning Council (SDPC). The minister however declined to mention the contents of the letter.

?We will probe new markets in China for our natural gas,? Purnomo said before his departure.

Joining the minister in his visit to China included BP-Migas chairman Rachmat Sudibjo, several House members and officials of BP Indonesia, a source told Petromindo.com.

It was not immediately clear what provinces in China the Indonesian delegation would visit.

Indonesia signed a contract with China in September to annually supply 2.6 million tons of liquefied natural gas to Fujian province, the first gas supply accord ever reached between the two countries.

The cumulative value of the contract is US$8.5 billion. (godang)
