Purnomo says no information yet on OPEC?s extraordinary conference

Tuesday, April 8 2003 - 04:49 AM WIB

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said Tuesday that it remained unclear whether OPEC will hold an extraordinary meeting on April 24 to discuss the oil market situation.

?We have not been informed about such a plan,? Purnomo told reporters.

OPEC president Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiya said Monday that he had proposed an OPEC meeting for April 24 to discuss the oil market situation.

?It is a consultative meeting in view of the 10-dollar dramatic drop in oil prices over a few days,? he said.

Abdullah, who is also Qatari energy minister, hinted that OPEC could take preventive action to halt the slide in prices, but he declined to elaborate.

OPEC has set a band between US$22 and $28 for its basket of crude oil, and if prices keep falling, OPEC will act, but in consultation with consumer countries. (godang)
