State owned fertilizer producer PT Pupuk Sriwijaya (Pusri) plans to begin the construction of the company?s coal fired power plant in March, next year as part of the company?s efficiency improvement program.

Pusri?s President Director Musthofa said that the coal-fired power plant would replace the gas-fired power plant which was currently operated by the fertilizer producer.

With the operation of the new power plant, the company would be able to reduce gas use by about 25 percent, he said, adding that the exiting power plant used about 225 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).

He said that the company was assessing three potential contractors for the construction of the power plant. ?Three companies joined the tender which was held recently. We are now holding a technical evaluation,? he added.

In addition to the new power plant, as part of its expansion program, Pusri also plans to begin the construction of new fertilizer factory II B in early January, next year, and to carry out renovation of the company?s ship and fertilizer storage.

At present, Pusri produces about 1.8 million tons of urea. The company hopes it will be able to increase the production to 2.5 million tons at the end of 2012.(*)
