INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement with  Chubu Electric Power to jointly assess the feasibility of a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) value chain between Japan and Australia. The study, conducted by INPEX's subsidiary INPEX Browse E&P Pty Ltd, will explore capturing CO2 in Japan and transporting it from the Port of Nagoya to Australia for storage.

The project builds on INPEX's greenhouse gas storage permit in Australia's Bonaparte Basin, granted in collaboration with TotalEnergies and Woodside Energy in 2022. This initiative is expected to support the proposed Darwin-based CCUS Hub, targeting CO2 injection by 2030. The CCS solution could be a crucial step for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG project to lower its greenhouse gas emissions.

Chubu Electric Power, aiming for net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, sees this collaboration as a potential decarbonization solution for the Nagoya region. Together, INPEX and Chubu Electric Power hope to establish a robust CCS value chain, contributing to Japan's broader transition toward a decarbonized society.

INPEX's long-term strategy, announced in 2022, positions CCUS as a key part of its goal to inject 2.5 million tons of CO2 annually by 2030, aligning with its vision to become a leader in the carbon capture sector.
