Petronas, through its subsidiary Petronas CCS Solutions Sdn Bhd (PCCSS), has launched a five-month study to evaluate the infrastructure for its Northern Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Hub in Terengganu, Malaysia. The study will assess the onshore terminal, jetty, and pipeline, paving the way for the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase.
The Northern CCS Hub is one of three planned CCS hubs by Petronas. It aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions for the company and challenging industries across the Asia Pacific region. The hub is projected to have an initial capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and is anticipated to commence CO2 injection by 2029.

Nora’in Md Salleh, Chief Executive Officer of PCCSS, emphasized the significance of this study. “Entering the pre-FEED phase is a key milestone towards establishing a pioneering CCS hub in Peninsular Malaysia. This study will help us evaluate existing infrastructure and develop optimal solutions for future operations,” she said, as reported by businesstoday.com.my.
The study will focus on the hub’s capability to handle liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers and ensure sufficient storage before CO2 injection. The Kertih Port Sdn Bhd land has been identified as a potential site for the onshore terminal.
This development follows a recent positive advancement for Petronas’s Southern CCS Hub, where PCCSS signed a land rental agreement with Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd.
