PanGlobal Bhd, a property investment group, hopes to resume its supply of coal to Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Bernama news agency reported.

"We are keen on resuming the coal supply to Tenaga as we did over a three-year period before," said its group chief executive officer, Alex Wong.

Previously, the company supplied about 300,000 tonnes to Tenaga but this was discontinued as we were not in a position to supply coal at a reduced price compared with other producers like Australia, he told reporters after the group's annual general meeting, here today.

However, with the opening of the new coal mines at Mukah, Sarawak, we are now in a better position to compete, he said.

He said the Merit-Pila Coalfield located near Kapit in Sarawak has a proven reserve of 440 million metric tonnes of coal.

This coalfield is one of the largest in South East Asia.

With the construction of Phase 2 at Sejingkat Power Corporation Sdn Bhd, coal demand in Sarawak is bound to increase in 2005.

"We are cautiously optimistic that Global Mineral (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd will continue to market at least 400,000 mt of coal in the coming year", he said.(*)
