Regional Coal: Singapore PowerSeraya eyes coal conversion plan

PowerSeraya, Singapore's second-largest power generator, may convert idle, oil-fired electricity units to run on coal or other fuels in the face of high prices, the company head said on June 30 as quoted by agency.
The company is in the final stage of a study on switching 500MW to 750MW of generation -- half its oil-fired capacity -- to run on other fuels. It would then be able to switch between the two fuel sources at will.
The company would take another six to 12 months to secure approval for a change from the Ministry of Environment, which manages emission standards. An industry source said PowerSeraya aimed to commission a coal-powered generator in 2007-2008 if the board approved the project.
PowerSeraya is owned by Singapore investment agency Temasek Holdings.
McGregor said, adding that PowerSeraya would seek coal from an unnamed nearby supplier. (*)
