QatarEnergy has signed a long-term agreement with Malaysia’s state energy firm Petronas to supply two million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year for 20 years, the companies said.
The sales and purchase agreement is scheduled to begin in 2028 and marks the first long-term LNG supply partnership directly signed between the two national energy companies.
The deal was finalised in Doha on the sidelines of the LNG2026 international conference. It was signed by Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and chief executive of QatarEnergy, and Tengku Muhammad Taufik, president and group chief executive of Petronas.

Under the agreement, LNG volumes will be delivered from Qatar to Malaysia to support the country’s long-term energy security. QatarEnergy said the deal reinforces its position as a leading global LNG supplier while underscoring deeper cooperation between the two companies.
The agreement comes as LNG demand continues to rise across Asia, with both firms citing the importance of long-term partnerships in navigating the global energy transition.
QatarEnergy and Petronas have an existing LNG relationship. In 2016, Qatargas — Qatar’s LNG export arm prior to its consolidation under QatarEnergy — signed a long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement with Petronas for more than 1.1 million tons per year.
