Russia's natural-gas monopoly OAO Gazprom is considering taking part in Chile's liquified natural gas project scheduled to be in place by 2008, Chilean state energy company Empresa Nacional del Petroleo was quoted by Dow Jones as saying Wednesday.
Gazprom and ENAP officials will in the near future meet to discuss technical and commercial issues in the proposed deal.
To reduce dependence on unreliable Argentine natural gas supply, used to generate about 30% of Chilean electricity under normal conditions, Chile has launched plans to build LNG reserve capacity. It has also been offered LNG by Indonesia.
The project, which will be handled by Enap, will cost an estimated US$400-500 million.(*)
