Regional LNG: Tokyo Gas purchases spot LNG cargo from Oman

Wednesday, April 16 2003 - 08:45 AM WIB

Tokyo Gas Co Ltd, Japan's largest city gas company, said on Tuesday that it had bought 60,000 tons of liquefied natural gas from Oman, representing its first purchase of LNG from that country.

A company spokesman said it had bought the cargo as a guard against continuing gas demand for heating.

"Temperatures have remained low into April, and we decided to purchase the LNG cargo as a precaution," the spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Tokyo Gas, which earlier this month said that it expected its LNG consumption to grow, has no immediate plans for further spot purchases, he said.

The firm's LNG use, estimated at about 7.74 million tons in the year that ended on March 31, is expected to climb to 9.32 million tons in 2007/08. (*)
