(March 19, 2006) PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) condemns the unlawful and violent burning down of the company?s exploration camp at Elang located 60-km from Batu Hijau mine by irresponsible persons on Sunday morning (19/3). As a result of this unlawful and violent action and the consequent concern for the safety of its employees and contractors, PTNNT has closed the camp and suspended exploration activities in the area. This event does not affect the Batu Hijau mine operation.

Out of knowledge of the intent of these persons and serious concern for the personal safety of our employees and contractors, PTNNT evacuated all personnel one day before the threatened incident happened.

Late Saturday afternoon about 50 people came to the area with gasoline and the intent to burn down the camp. There was no demand brought by this group for discussion with PTNNT. On Sunday (19/3) the group set fire to the camp.

We have notified the government and police about this violent action. Currently the police and local government are taking the necessary steps to handle this situation. We are hopeful that the authorities will investigate this case and bring the guilty parties to justice. We will continue to coordinate with government and police to resolve this issue.

PTNNT has been contributing to local development by employing members of local communities, purchasing goods and services from local suppliers, and providing social assistance. PTNNT is disappointed that the illegal act by this small group of people has caused the larger community to suffer as many people will lose their jobs and businesses.(end of release)
