Release: Regional LNG: LNG remains essential to America's energy needs

(WASHINGTON, Jan. 23, International LNG Alliance)-- Despite the recent tragedy in Skikda, Algeria, LNG remains an essential component of our energy future, according to the International LNG Alliance (ILNGA).

LNG imports have rapidly increased over the last few years in light of surging demand and tight domestic supplies. As gas demand continues to surpass productive capacity, LNG can play an important role in significantly lowering costs and meeting the needs of U.S. energy consumers.

ILNGA believes that it would be unwise to make any judgments until a thorough investigation yields more information. "We simply don't have all of the facts right now," ILNGA Executive Director David Sweet cautioned. Sonatrach has promised a full investigation.

U.S. land-based LNG facilities have a commendable safety record and LNG has been used as a safe, clean, and reliable energy source for decades.

The International LNG Alliance (ILNGA) extends its sympathies and condolences to the victims, their families, and the entire nation of Algeria.
