Release: USAID and BP Indonesia sign US$9 million agreement Bird?s Head Development Initiative

The agreement consists of three integrated programs: (1) the Bird?s Head Governance Initiative, working in combination with local governments, civil society groups and others to put new resources to work for the economic and social betterment of the region while protecting a unique environment; (2) the Bird?s Head Education Initiative, focusing on strengthening the capacity of local governments to manage, plan and deliver high quality education services and increase the quality of teacher training; (3) the Bird?s Head Health Initiative, which will undertake a program of assistance focused on combating HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, as well as on improving overall maternal and child health levels in the region.
William M. Frej, USAID/Indonesia Mission director said, ?By forming such partnerships between the public and the private sectors, we ensure that funding expands our impact, and that we are able to address more effectively these critical issues.? USAID has brokered several public private partnerships in Indonesia, bringing together development expertise, financial resources, and regional presence to leverage resources and make a difference.
?We are pleased that we could bring our resources through the BP Foundation and the Tangguh LNG project with USAID?s support and expertise in a way that will promote good governance and transparency and contribute to building local capacity,? said Emma Delaney, Vice President for Tangguh?s Integrated Social Program.
