Residents blockade paralyzes Nuansa coal production

More than a hundred residents forcefully stopped coal-mining operations of PT Nuansacipta Coal Investment (NCI) in Samarinda, East Kalimantan on Wednesday, demanding compensation for damages the company has caused to their lands and infrastructure.

Kompas daily reported that the blockade has caused production to stop. The report did not give further detail about the mine?s production rate.

Residents demanded compensation of Rp. 2.5 billion or about US$300,000 from the company.

According to the report, NCI has concession of around 2,000 hectares of land in Palaran, Samarinda, but only 30 hectares has been exploited.(*)
